Fun Friday - Banana Boats!

Some of you are still not quite ready for cook-outs, but WE ARE!  Don't hate me... you will get there soon enough.  When you do, try this fun little dessert Dear Daughter learned from one of her Girl Scout leaders.  She cooked it over a campfire, but it works just as well on your backyard grill...

First, easy peasy ingredients that you possibly already have in your pantry... bananas, marshmallows, and chocolate chips.  We only had the big fat marshmallows, but if you are buying ingredients, I would suggest the smaller version... also we had milk chocolate chips, but if I were buying them I would go semi-sweet.  It's totally a personal preference, anything goes... might even try peanut butter chips next time.  YUMMO!

As you see in this pic, peel back one strip of the banana and leave it attached.  Take a spoon and scoop out enough banana to make it resemble a canoe...a little bit riper banana seems to work best.  Then load that baby up with marshmallows and chocolate chips!

I See... a Bottlebrush Tree!

Weeping Bottlebrush Tree

Several of my faithful followers (LOVE you faithful followers, by the way) asked me yesterday about the photo of the fuzzy red blooms... here is a full shot of one of our Weeping Bottlebrush Tree.  Eventually it will have twice as many flowers, I'll try to remember to snap a pic when it is in it's FULL glory.

We have two of these beauties next to our pool and they are now large enough to provide total shade over our patio table.  Yea!  The hummingbirds LOVE their bright  blooms, and since one of them is directly outside my family room window, I get a ringside seat for their entertaining little hummingbird dance.  I do wonder though, where do these cute little guys live the rest of the year?

Random Thoughts... I Think

Driving home from soccer last night, out of the clear blue Dear Daughter says, "I wonder what it would be like to have no belly button?"... all I could think was, I wonder what it would be like to have nothing more pressing to think about than what it would be like to have no belly button?

Bracket Buster!

The Walton Gang - Vintage Book

First of all let me apologize if you are not a sporty type, but I can't let today go by without a shout-out to my basketball peeps... don't me wrong, I couldn't shoot a 3 pointer (or possibly even a free throw) if my life depended on it, but I am possibly the world's greatest spectator.  Without a doubt, I am happy as a pig in you-know-what if I am at ANY type of sporting event.  This week my town is hosting the MOTHER of all sporting events, The Final Four.  Argue all you want, but I truly believe this is the best of all sports championships...  your team is never a sure thing, an 11 seed is just as likely as a 1 seed to make it to the BIG DANCE.  If you have ever filled out a Final Four bracket in hopes of winning $10 from your 11 year old (hanging my head in shame),  then you know all bets are OFF when it comes to March Madness.

My bracket was blown LONG ago... actually, I'm pretty sure everyone in my house got sunk somewhere around the Sweet Sixteen.  I am cheering for Butler tonight, because I am just a sucker for an underdog (and I think their coach is so stinking adorable).  My daddy (a.k.a. Big Daddy) is a Vanderbilt alum, and if there was ever a perennial underdog, it's those darn Commodores.  But isn't that the beauty of sports?  There's always hope, always next year, always a clean slate and a fresh scoreboard.  So, with great apologies to my beloved Longhorns (who lost WAY too early for my liking) today I am a bracket bustin' BULLDOG!  LET'S GO DAWGS!

Run Kelly Run!

Marathon Runner Collage Painting

Now that I've finished up my most recent long term sub job, I no longer have an excuse not to exercise more frequently.  BUMMER.  This week I'm getting back to the Couch to 5K plan.  Ok, I'm going to be honest... I DESPISE running.  Truly.  The day we had to run the mile in elementary for the Presidential Physical Fitness test was always the day I was most likely to feign illness (sorry Mimi).  I also know there is no faster way to get myself back in fighting shape than running.  UGH.

If you have never checked out C25K, you really should.  It's like "Running for Dummies"... you can download their app to your phone or itouch, or go old school and just print the plan and carry it with you.  Crank up the ipod and hit the ground... walking.  Well, they start you off walking anyway, and running in short spirts until you supposedly build up enough stamina to run for longer and longer stretches, and eventually you supposedly will be able to run for an entire 5K.  I think I am blogging about this in part to hold myself accountable, because I know someone is going to want to know how it's going... so, here I go.  Off and... wait for it... wait for it...WALKING... ok, if you insist... running.
